Safe Motherhood Programs has placed a variety of volunteer interns in LifeWrap projects both in the U.S and overseas. (read about them in 'News' or read the intern blog). We currently have volunteer opportunities available in San Francisco and Zambia.
San Francisco office intern
Research Assistant, Summer 2012
Duties: Assist with data cleaning and analyses, prepare multiple Power Point presentations to include data for upcoming international conference. Other light administrative duties as required. The focus of this internship is preparing presentations for the conference in order to effectively show the latest data on the clinical trial. Intern will gain experience handling and cleaning a large data set. This is most appropriate for an MPH student.
Qualifications: Excellent Power Point and writing skills are a must. Knowledge of Endnote, PubMed helpful, experienced in Word, Excel and internet searches. Knowledge of STATA, SPSS, online data systems a plus.
Time requirements: 40 hours / week for 12 weeks, beginning June 1, 2012.
Compensation: No financial compensation.

Field Intern for Summer 2012 Needed
About: The internship is based in the Copperbelt region of Zambia. This is a cluster randomized control study which compares outcomes based on evidence from intervention and control clinics. The intervention clinics are the clinics that are using the NASG as a first aid device for patients suffering from hypovolemic shock caused by bleeding during pregnancy.
Duties: The intern will provide logistic support for the local Zambian team, review data collection forms for accuracy and help to supply information to complete forms, encourage protocol adherence, visit study clinics, train and support local health care workers to collect accurate, high-quality data—varied duties include preparing curriculum for training, assisting in training sessions, assisting midwives and doctors provide clinical care and to accurately record clinical outcomes and procedures, to assist in data entry and data quality management, to liaise with the San Francisco office and in-country staff.
Qualifications: Candidates with experience living in developing countries and/or conducting research are especially desirable as are clinical
nursing, midwifery, or obstetrical skills. Desired qualification include an interest in maternal health. Must be highly detail- oriented, be well organized and have exccellent follow through skills.
Time requirements: Must be able to commit 40 hours per week for 12 weeks, beginning May 30, 2012.
Compensation/Funding: Interns must secure their own funding for travel and lodging.
There is no funding for these positions but it is valuable experience for someone who wants to make a huge difference in women’s lives.
